Occupational medicine aims to promote and protect the health
of workers by helping to ensure a healthy and safe working environment.
The basic principles in this area (which require a systematic approach) are:
disease prevention, health protection and working capacity.
Work and health
Legislative Decree 81/2008 provides, for activities capable of causing damage to the health of workers, the implementation of health surveillance based on the specific risk factors to which workers are exposed.
Health surveillance consists of medical visits to assess suitability for the job and periodic checks carried out by the Competent Doctor (occupational physician) appointed by the company.
In particular:

- periodic medical check-up
- specialist visits
- drug addiction absence visits
- medical examination at the request of the worker
- medical examination on the occasion of a change of job
- medical examination prior to returning to work
- medical examination upon termination of employment

- specialist visits
- drug addiction absence visits
- medical examination at the request of the worker, if it is considered by the competent doctor to be related to professional risks or to his health conditions, susceptible to worsening due to the work activity carried out, in order to express the opinion of suitability for the specific task
- medical examination upon change of job to verify suitability for the specific job
- medical examination prior to resuming work, following an absence for health reasons lasting more than sixty consecutive days, in order to verify suitability for the job
